Manfred Esser, Managing Director of Kloepfel Engineering GmbH, on His Role as a Maker in the Team

Manfred Esser, Managing Director of Kloepfel Engineering GmbH, embodies true maker mentality. With technical expertise, a sharp eye for economic efficiency, and a strong sense of pragmatism, he leads his team through the complex challenges of modern engineering. Whether in production optimization, cost analysis, or process development – he combines technical excellence with entrepreneurial thinking. In this interview, he explains why efficiency in engineering is now critical for competitiveness, which megatrends are shaping the industry, and what personally drives him to move forward every day with full energy as a “maker.”

The Art of Making – or The Power of the Maker’s Place

1.What’s your “I’ll do it” story?

My name is Manfred Esser, and I am the Managing Director of Kloepfel Engineering GmbH. Together with my team, I help companies tackle technical challenges – pragmatically, efficiently, and sustainably. Our expertise ranges from production optimization and technical product cost analysis to the strategic development of engineering processes. What sets us apart? We speak the language of technology and manufacturing, but we think like entrepreneurs. Our clients appreciate that we don’t just advise – we get involved. That makes us an extension of their team.

    Challenges – Relevant Megatrends

2.The economy is facing major challenges. Why is now the right time to work with you?

Especially in economically uncertain times, efficiency in engineering isn’t a “nice-to-have” – it’s vital for survival. Many companies struggle with rising production costs, skilled labor shortages, and supply bottlenecks. That’s exactly where we come in: with technical cost-reduction programs, solid make-or-buy analyses, and hands-on implementation expertise that delivers real impact. We help secure innovation while increasing profitability. Those who fail to optimize now will fall behind tomorrow.

3.Which global megatrends have the strongest impact on your field – for example, digitalization, skilled labor shortages, geopolitical crises, or sustainability?

Digitalization, sustainability, and the shortage of skilled workers are the three strongest drivers in our field. Our clients are under pressure to develop faster, produce more resource-efficiently, and still deliver innovation. We support them with methods like Design-to-Cost, Simultaneous Engineering, and digital development tools. We don’t just look at individual components – we take a holistic approach, optimizing everything from product design to manufacturing. In doing so, we turn megatrends into competitive advantages.

    My Career as a Maker

4.Can you tell us about a project that particularly demonstrates how Kloepfel solves client challenges?

A project with a mid-sized special-purpose machine manufacturer perfectly illustrates the value we create: The client was struggling with long development times, high production costs, and increasing competitive pressure. Together with the on-site engineering team, we developed technical alternatives, reduced product variants, and implemented a new cost breakdown model. The result: over 15% cost savings on the target product and a noticeably faster time-to-market. After the project, the client said: “Thanks to Kloepfel, our technology isn’t just cheaper – it’s better.”

5.What advice would you give to someone starting a career in engineering consulting?

Curiosity, technical understanding, and the drive to make things better – that’s the trio you need here. No two days in engineering consulting are the same. You have to think fast, analyze persistently, and find creative solutions. If you like to think outside the box and see engineering not just as theory but as hands-on implementation, you’re in the right place with us. The best part: the variety of projects means you learn an incredible amount in a short time.

6.What does a typical workday look like for you?

In the morning, I first check the project status and coordinate with my team – short paths, clear decisions. Then I’m often with clients or supporting our team with analyses and calculations. I love combining operational depth with strategic thinking. Coffee? A must. Exchange with colleagues? Essential. I believe in direct communication and a hands-on mentality – that’s what we live every day.

Personally: The Person Behind the Maker

7.What was your last personal highlight at Kloepfel?

One highlight was definitely completing a major transformation project for an automotive supplier. Over several months, we optimized processes, restructured engineering, and achieved measurable cost reductions. When the client described us as a “game changer” during the final presentation, I knew: this is exactly why I do what I do. Moments like that show how much a team can achieve together.

8.What do you value most about your team?

Technical know-how combined with passion and pragmatism – that’s our recipe for success. Everyone on the team gives their all. We have flat hierarchies, high personal responsibility, and strong team spirit. I’m particularly proud that theory alone doesn’t count here – results do.

9.What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

“Always keep a clear, practical perspective – even in complex technical situations.” Often, the best solution isn’t found in the most complicated technology or exotic material, but in a well-thought-out, pragmatic combination of technical logic and experience. This approach has given me the decisive edge in many projects and remains a core part of how we work at Kloepfel Engineering.

10.What are the three things (or apps) you couldn’t live without?

Definitely Excel. Then, of course, our central working tool: the Cost Control Tool. We use it for detailed cost breakdowns, variant comparisons, and target cost calculations – it’s the backbone of our consulting work. And third: my calendar. Without solid time management, even the best solution won’t help.
