Robert Steinbrück, Senior Logistics Consultant,on his role as a maker in the team

At Kloepfel Group, we are the place for makers. THE MAKER’S PLACE stands for pragmatic procurement consulting and results-driven solutions, developed by makers for makers.

Robert Steinbrück, Senior Logistics Consultant at Kloepfel Consulting, is an expert in international freight projects and leads his team in optimizing global transport costs. His focus: tailored freight analyses, smart tenders, and measurable savings – without compromising on quality or stability. In this interview, he shares his “I-do-it” story, current challenges in the logistics market, and why companies should rely on strong partners in freight procurement right now.

The Art of Making – or the Power of The Maker’s Place

    1. What is your “I’ll-do-it” story?

I trained as a freight forwarding clerk and have a great passion for sea and air freight. After several years in corporate freight procurement, I now help clients at Kloepfel optimize their international transport costs. Our product is customized freight cost projects with measurable results. We analyze flows, negotiate with carriers, and create transparency. What makes us unique is that we understand both the language of procurement and logistics and combine the two. This allows us to reduce costs without sacrificing quality or stability. For our clients, this means better conditions, more control, and sustainable savings on global shipments.

    Challenges – Relevant Megatrends

    2. The economy faces major challenges. Why is now the right time to work with you?

Volatile rates and complex supply chains challenge companies more than ever. Often, there isn’t enough time to deeply address logistics costs. That’s where we come in. We provide market transparency, negotiate professionally with service providers, and uncover savings potentials often hidden internally. In uncertain times, a strong, experienced partner in freight procurement is essential. Our expertise ensures cost control, delivery reliability, and clear decision-making foundations. Now is the right time to question processes and start better prepared for the future.

    3. Which global megatrends impact your area the most – for example, digitalization, skills shortages, geopolitical crises, sustainability?

Digitalization, sustainability, and geopolitical uncertainties are fundamentally changing logistics. Transport must become more transparent, efficient, and resilient. At the same time, skilled labor is scarce – both internally and among service providers. We address these trends with data-driven analyses, digital tenders, and smart benchmarks. Every challenge is an opportunity: companies that review and modernize their logistics structures now will gain long-term competitiveness. We help them recognize and leverage these potentials.

    My Career as a Maker

    4. Can you share a project that particularly demonstrates how Kloepfel solves client problems?

One exciting project was optimizing global flows to a client’s distribution centers. Transit times and local conditions, such as shipments to the U.S., were critical. We identified a service provider perfectly suited to the setup and locally based. Processes became more stable and efficient, transit times improved, and significant cost reductions were achieved – all without compromising service quality. This project shows how targeted analysis and precise tenders can create measurable improvements.

    5. What advice would you give to someone starting a career in consulting?

If you enjoy analytical work, quickly learn new topics, and like direct client contact, consulting is the right fit. At Kloepfel, no project is the same – you constantly learn and see tangible results. Key qualities are initiative, communication skills, and strong business understanding. Be ready to take responsibility and be open to new industries and challenges.

    6. What does a typical workday look like for you?

My workday rarely repeats, making the job very varied. Typical tasks include client meetings, freight structure analyses, and negotiations with service providers. Creativity is needed for complex requirements. A clear morning plan – a to-do list and brief overview – is essential. Motivation comes from visible progress in projects and direct interaction with clients.

Personally – The Person Behind the Maker

    7. What was your last personal highlight at Kloepfel?

A recent highlight was a challenging project in tank container logistics. The close collaboration with the client demonstrated the value of our work. Fun at Kloepfel also makes a big difference – whether at Christmas parties or ship events. These moments create a relaxed atmosphere.

    8. What do you appreciate most about your team?

I value that our team speaks the same language – most come from freight forwarding, share similar experiences, and understand each other. This creates real cohesion, especially on tricky topics. I also must highlight the humor of some colleagues – it keeps morale high, even during stressful projects. This makes business trips particularly enjoyable.

    9. What was the best advice you’ve ever received?

Not exactly advice, more a formative moment. Early in my career, on one of my first trips abroad, I thought everything had to be formal and serious. But Australian business partners approached things with calm, ease, and humor – without being unprofessional. That left a lasting impression on me.

    10. What three things (or apps) can you never do without?

Three essentials: Excel – for daily analyses, calculations, and evaluations; Python – for larger datasets and complex calculations; and my simple to-do list in a basic editor. No frills, just clear structure to stay organized and set priorities.
