Study by Fraunhofer IAO and the Bertelsmann Foundation on Dual Transformation

Sustainability remains imperative not only due to the climate crisis, writes the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO) in a press release.

According to the institute, there is no universal solution for the dual transformation of sustainability and digitalization in companies. However, it is clear that a strong commitment from management and the willingness to involve employees are key success factors for medium-sized enterprises.

Factors and Framework Conditions for Dual Transformation in a Corporate Context

On this topic, the Fraunhofer IAO conducted a study on behalf of the Bertelsmann Foundation titled “Success Factors for a Successful Dual Transformation.”

According to the Fraunhofer Institute, the study examines the key factors and framework conditions for a successful dual transformation in a corporate context. To this end, representatives from 19 companies were interviewed between February 2024 and June 2024.

Sustainability: A Key Component of Corporate Strategy

“Sustainability has evolved from a ‘nice-to-have’ to a strategic cornerstone,” says Claudia Ricci, research associate at the Fraunhofer Institute for Industrial Engineering (IAO). According to her, sustainability is no longer a peripheral issue but has become a central element of corporate strategy.

    Driving Innovation

Digitalization and AI are important levers in this process, writes Fraunhofer IAO. According to the institute, digitalization can help save costs and resources. Additionally, it supports process monitoring and facilitates the establishment of new business models. Economic expert Birgit Wintermann from the Bertelsmann Foundation emphasizes: “Sustainability drives innovation, and innovation drives sustainability.”

    Dual Success Through Dual Transformation

Dual transformation can lead to dual success, the Fraunhofer IAO highlights. The study results show that medium-sized companies that strategically integrate sustainability and digitalization gain competitive advantages. Furthermore, these companies unlock new business models and contribute to maintaining good living and environmental conditions.

Regarding management responsibilities, Birgit Wintermann states: “Leadership must set an example in dual transformation.” She stresses that executives must embody the transformation and provide employees with clear guidance. Additionally, she points out that no company can secure its future if it loses sight of transformation.
